IGBP Land Cover Validation Confidence Sites
at Boston University

Boston University is developing a global Confidence Site database as a contribution to the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) Land Cover Working Group.
The UCSB validation effort is based on a stratified random sample of the USGS EDC AVHRR global IGBP land cover classification product.  UCSB researchers overlaid 1 km x 1 km cells corresponding to these primary samples on Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery.  They also cast two secondary samples per primary sample and a perimeter polygon around all three.  Regional expert analysts came to the USGS EROS Data Center in September, 1998, delineated polygons on overlays within each sample's perimeter polygon, and characterized biophysical parameters for these polygons on an associated spreadsheet.

We have incorporated this material in STEP, and provide it here for download by the community.
